It’s been a strange road leading up to the start of production for the highly anticipated latest Street Fighter adaptation. First, celebrated brother directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou exited the project after the film collided with their latest horror flick Bring Her Back and then Sony pulled the film from their 2026 release schedule which didn’t bode well for the film, but things have changed considerably with Kitao Sakurai taking over in the director’s chair.
In recent weeks, casting has ramped up to full effect with some stellar choices being added to the mix including Andrew Koji as Ryu, WWE champ Cody Rhodes as Guile and Noah Centineo playing Ken Masters. Hollywood A lister Jason Momoa has even joined the cast as Blanka and now we have our first official group shot of the cast sans Momoa and WWE superstar Roman Reigns (AKA Joe Anoa’i) who is playing Akuma and you can check them out below!

The group shot comes courtesy of Vidyut Jammwal’s official Instagram page and there is another actress pictured towards the far right. This may be the one playing Cammy, but no official word has been given. There is still no word on what the plot will be, but fans are hoping that this adaptation relies more heavily on the actual video game that it is based on.
The current cast of the new Street Fighter includes Andrew Koji (Ryu), Cody Rhodes (Guile), Noah Centineo (Ken), Olivier ‘The Dutch Giant’ Richters (Zangief), 50 Cent (Balrog), Andrew Schulz (Dan Hibiki), Callina Liang (Chun-Li), David Dastmalchian (M. Bison), Vidyut Jammwal (Dhalsim), Orville Peck (Vega), Roman Reigns as Akuma and Jason Moma as Blanka. Like I said in the past, this is a solid cast and some legit fighting talent so hopefully it will transcend on screen as a true and honest interpretation of the source material.
In his post, Jammwal stated, “In the company of warriors, I found my tribe.”
Production is ramping up, but Sony has yet to release a new launch date for the film although speculation is that it will still arrive in 2026. The current version of the script was penned by Dalan Musson who most recently worked on Captain America: Brave New World. Director Kitao Sakurai is best known for his Emmy nominated for work on The Eric Andre Show as well as Prime’s twisted Metal series which is also based off a video game. The original release date for Street Fighter had been March 20, 2026, but we will have to wait longer to see what the new one is, but it looks like they are simply taking the time to makes sure they get this one right.
What is evident is that Sony and Capcom wanted to go back to the drawing board after a few failed attempts at the property which included the tongue in cheek 1994 version with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late, great Raul Julia in his final role. The film does hold a special place in the hearts of fans everywhere, but it isn’t a true adaptation of the game source material. We won’t even speak of 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which was a grittier turn for the I.P.
