DCU co-CEO James Gunn dropped a bomb today on social media as the prolific genre filmmaker and current head of DCU Studios officially unveiled that there will be a Superman sequel flying high in 2027. Gunn presented the below social post on X and Instagram just a short time ago and it is a comic book style image of David Corenswet’s Man of Steel standing by arch nemesis Lex Luthor played by Nicholas Hoult. The image below was drawn by nonother than Jim Lee! Check it out below!
Officially titled Man of Tomorrow, Gunn dropped the news and also revealed a release date set for July 9th of 2027 which is prime time summer movie schedule time meaning the studio has all the confidence that the follow up will deliver with audiences. Fans will take note that Lex is fully encased in his green and purple war suit which is straight out of the comics.
Gunn has teased that the sequel will not be a direct follow up to this year’s Superman and will most likely feature Luthor escaping incarceration and building his suit to stand on an even battlefield with the last son of Krypton. Gunn had already informed The Hollywood Reporter while promoting the second season of Peacemaker that the script is done and ready to go.
“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
Next year will see the release of Supergirl on July 26th along with the body horror flick Clayface bowing in theaters on September 11th. Fans are anxiously awaiting any and all news from Gunn about Batman, Wonder Woman and anyone else that may be dropping into the DCU. The TV show Lanterns starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre also hits HBOMAX next year as well.
Get ready to look up once again as there is more to come on Man of Tomorrow and more from the DCU!
