Even though this movie will probably not crack its production costs when it hits theaters next month, every trailer looks better and better and with the latest, Paramount’s live action video game actioner Street Fighter looks to be one hell of a faithful take and one that this franchise definitely needs. From the visuals to the extreme fight choreography to the easter eggs and most important…the finishing moves, Street Fighter looks to satisfy hardcore fans looking for a tried-and-true version of the video game that they love. Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!
Kitao Sakurai helms the ambitious project with an all-star ensemble led by Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoai as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Eric André as Don Sauvage with Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson as Balrog, and Jason Momoa as Blanka. Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Kyle Mooney as Marvin, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy round out the supporting cast.
TRAILER TACTICAL REACTION: While Mortal Kombat II was superior to the first film but still falling short of meeting expectations, this new Street Fighter looks to firmly cement itself as the ultimate live action take of the iconic fighting video game. The cast, including martial arts action sensation Andrew Koji and the new John Rambo himself Noah Centineo, look fantastic and this looks like a fun, stylish, pulverizing fever dream of fan service that is definitely needed. It looks like they have thrown in everything plus the kitchen sink in terms of homage dripping moments and the action design looks to infuse brutal and grounded killer moves with the more over the top theatrics that the game is known for. this looks to level up the franchise and finally deliver something we can all be happy with. We shall see!
