Well, we all saw this coming and it pretty much came right after the movie debuted on Netflix and became the streaming service’s most watch movie this year. That’s right, Alan Ritchson is going to jock up and do battle with more alien mechanical annihilators as Netflix has greenlit a follow up to War Machine.
The news comes with a title reveal for the sequel and many are comparing it to another classic franchise as the new film’s title is going plural. The sequel is officially called War Machines and that pretty much spells doom and gloom for Ritchson and the human race as he only had to contend with one bio-enhanced intergalactic predator and now there are more on the way.
The news of the sequel and title was revealed via social media via the franchise’s director (yes, the film is now officially a franchise) Patrick Hughes who is returning to helm the follow up along with the first film’s writer James Beaufort. It’s also been confirmed that Ritchson is tacking up again to play Sergeant “81” who pretty much single handedly destroyed the first threat by rubbing some dirt on it…literally. Check out Hughes’ Instagram post below where he confirms that War Machine is the highest watched streaming movie so far of 2026!
The sequel name War Machines is a total homage to Aliens, James Cameron’s iconic sci-fi action follow up to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic Alien. Just like that franchise included an army of aliens from the initial one in the original, expect more alien hybrids to show up in another attempt to eradicate earth. My money is on Ritchson though because he figured out how to stop the mecha-beasts in the original. War Machines is “expected to be a much larger-scale follow-up, introducing “Operation Global Shield” and expanding the sci-fi universe left open by the first movie’s cliffhanger ending.” I’m pretty sure Hughes and company have an even more bombastic sci-fi action epic in store for fans.
I never did a full review for War Machine due to time constraints but I was onboard from the get go and the original was an erratic blend of Predator, Aliens and Battlefield L.A. There was no shortage of brutally R Rated tactical violence mixed with apocalyptic implications with Ritchson deploying beast mode throughout and cementing the fact that he is one of today’s elite action stars. A lot of Netflix’s movie output misses the mark, but War Machine was a substantial winner as it took the best from past genre films and made it its own.
