Star Wars: Celebration hit Japan yesterday with the fury of an attack from a fleet of Star Destroyers and with it, there were many special announcements to give fans hope that the blockbuster franchise will right itself after a series of setbacks. The biggest news that came out of the convention was that Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) is set to direct a new standalone film called Star Wars: Starfighter and that The Fall Guy star Ryan Gosling will suit up to headline it!
The new solo adventure even has a release date already of May 28th, 2027, with filming set to commence this fall. It is also important to note that even though this is standalone project it will be a direct sequel to Episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker with the action taking place five years after the events of the last movie.

The announcement of the anticipated Gosling/Levy team up even comes with an official synopsis and a teaser trailer that hit the celebration with the tagline reading:
“Star Wars: Starfighter,” which will be directed by Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling, is a standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” The film, which will begin production this Fall, is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”
Yeah, I know, that’s not a synopsis per say but essentially a concise paragraph of what the movie will be but it’s still enough to get Star Wars fans like me excited. Levy is one of the most sought-after filmmakers of today with a string of hits that include Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine which was the studios biggest hit in years. The celebrated director is also responsible for making all three Night at the Museum movies, Free Guy, Real Steel, and many more.
Gosling is a Bonafide Hollywood star with a string of successes as well including most recently The Fall Guy as well as The Gray Man and the sensation that is Barbie. Gosling is quietly transforming into an action star and linking up with Star Wars looks to be a surefire home run.
