My name is John Jerva and I approve this way to advertise your upcoming sci-fi/horror flick. Director Fede Alvarez and 20th Century studios went the throwback method to advertise the upcoming Alien: Romulus which looks to reinvigorate the franchise after creator Ridley Scott almost killed it with Prometheus and Alien Covenant. I won’t bore you all with the gory details again, but I will say that Scott had a new vision, and that vision was deft.
Director Fede Alvarez, best known for helming the newer version of the Evil Dead, looks to put a horrific jolt in the franchise as his Alien: Romulus looks to throw it back to Scott’s original while adding a little dash of Cameron. Whatever he’s doing, I approve after seeing the trailers and pics from the movie. Stripping the franchise to its savage roots is the best way to reinvigorate the series and it aims to combine the best of both worlds when it comes to the first two films.
In a little bit of marketing savvy, Alvarez and the folks over at 20th Century Studios mailed out retro VHS screeners that contained an unseen sequence from the pic. The old school VHS tapes were sent out to select press to view and here’s hoping they had VHS machines at the ready to witness what was on them. the artwork is definitely vintage looking and here’s hoping that they use the cover art for an official release because the cover art looks damn impressive and throws it back to when film companies actually made decent posters to promote their films. Nowadays, key art is mostly just jumbled up AI messes and the results are something a grade schooler could do better with. Check out the VHS box art for the Alien: Romulus footage screeners below!

Do you see what I mean people? That artwork above is tight and sick and I would hang that on my wall. It just screams James Cameron’s Aliens and I love how the cast is presented with the visuals and the dreaded Xenomorph lurking in the background. The film’s final girl star Cailee Spaeny is front and center rocking the earlier version of the M-41A Pulse Rifle which she uses to full effect in the trailer. I get chills just thinking of it. I even love how 20th century Films gave the boxes that throwback VHS worn cover look to full immerse the press in the 80’s. If anyone has access to one of these copies, send it my way.

The VHS tape also included a sneak peek at the SDCC panel that the movie will be doing next weekend when the event is in full swing at Hall H. Alvarez was the one who insisted that the screener be sent on VHS which officially makes him my favorite filmmaker right now.
Alien: Romulus will take place between the events in Alien and Aliens. The film will hit theaters next month on August 16th, 2024, and an extended trailer hit last month which you can see below!
Official Synopsis: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.
A featurette also launched last week which takes fans behind the scenes on the anticipated installment.
Spaeny stars along with David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Spaeny is the final girl of the film, like I said earlier, and here’s hoping Ripley’s can-do spirit motivates our newest heroine so she can do battle with the iconic monster and represent for the human race.
