YES!!!!! I never thought I would see the day but alas here we are as THR is reporting that Paramount Pictures is developing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie based on The Last Ronin! Are you ready for the catch? They’re finally throwing out the kiddie vibe started back in the 90’s and this one is going to be an R-Rated flick with a…wait for it…“a high body count!” OG turtles fans rejoice! For all of us that started with the hyper-violent and adult oriented underground comic from day one will finally get their big screen Ninja bloodbath! Can you tell I’m excited? Making the film The Last Ronin is just icing on the cake as this is one of my favorite stories from the Turtles more adult library. It’s time to slice and dice.
According to THR: After the success of last year’s animated hit film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Paramount Pictures is keeping turtle power going by putting a new feature project into development.

This one, however, will go beyond the realm of the all-ages material the long-standing property is known for and instead go into gritty, R-rated, territory.
Paramount is developing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, adapting a popular storyline seen in the recent IDW comics, as a live-action feature with the intent of making it for an R-rating.

Hardcore Mega fans of TMNT all know that The Last Ronin takes centerstage in a totalitarian New York City of the future and is the most violent and adult oriented Turtle story which centers on Splinter and the Turtles being executed one by one by the grandson of their archnemesis The Shredder until only one turtle remains to combat the new version of shredder and his army of synthetic Foot Ninja Clan. The remaining Turtle who is unclear which one of the four it is at first embarks on a blood-soaked kill mission of vengeance utilizing all the weapons of his fallen brothers.
Tyler Burton Smith, who co-penned the rad looking R-rated actioner Boy Kills World is writing the script with former head of DC Films Walter Hamada producing via his 18hz production banner. The original The Last Ronin Comic series was penned by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman along with Tom Waltz which was based on an older story by Eastman and his TMNT partner Peter Laird. The artists on the comic project included Esau and Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop, and Eastman. The books were released between 2020 and 2022 with a sequel titled TMNT: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution hitting comic bookstore shelves earlier this year to massive response.
There have been five live action Turtles movies as well as animated fair along with the children’s cartoon and subsequent animated features over the years, but this is the first one ever that will be R rated and bloody. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem from Seth Rogen was released last year, and I was not a fan of the style of film and animation that it delivered.
I forgive them now and hopefully this one is fast tracked so we get it as soon as possible. The report also states that the film will be live action which will kick ass seeing this newer and more savage TMNT run a bloody gauntlet of ninjas. We can only hope that they go old school and do the animatronic vibe instead of CGI, but I don’t think we can get that lucky, but you never know. I think this is a I’ll take what I can get moment right here. let’s just be excited that they finally listened to fans and are giving us the violent and adult themed live action turtles film we have been craving since the underground comic first hit in 1984.
Animatronic Turtles can be done and done well I might add if those involved love this as much as we do, and I present defense exhibit A and B below courtesy of John Likens on YouTube:
The Last Ronin needs to look like the test footage above but with a buckets of blood added in. Just like the movies in the 90’s, bring on the best martial arts action performers in the business right now to fill the suits along with someone like Tim Man choreographing the action and we will have blood-soaked gold on our hands.
It’s always been a chore on how to depict the Turtles using their weapons to make it more kid friendly but now it looks like Paramount is throwing out the book and saying, “What the hell. Let’s make it violent and savage.” You had me at high body count.
