News coming out of this week’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas has unveiled that a new trailer dropped for the John Wick spin-off flick Ballerina which sees Hollywood megastar Ana de Armas entering the universe of Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga. The spin-off has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons when it was announced that the movie would be delayed a full year so action maestro and John Wick creator Chad Stahelski could come in and salvage the action set pieces and make them…well...John Wick worthy. The film is being directed by Underworld franchise helmer Len Wiseman and now some lucky audience members got a first look at footage from the June 2025 release. What was the consensus on the viewing? If you ask the ones in attendance, Ballerina is going to serve up some hyper-kinetic fight and Gun Fu action and some savage and balletic violence worthy of the action franchise. Well, there you go. It looks like Mr. Stahelski has swooped in and did his job once again.

Reports earlier this week said that the film would take place between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. It was also confirmed that Keanu Reeves is, in fact, in the movie and will offer Armas’ character of Rooney help and guidance. The trailer also showed Rooney entering The Continental and being welcomed by Charon who was played by the late, great Lance Reddick in his final role as the popular character. The trailer also featured returning universe characters of the Director and Winston played by Angelica Huston and Ian McShane respectively as well as footage of a newer character played by The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.
We all know that Armas’ character of Rooney was introduced in the third John Wick movie, and it is being said that Ballerina will tackle key questions from the other films. The plot for this first spin-off centers on Rooney who will execute an intricate kill mission of revenge against those that murdered her family.
Sources are also saying that by the look of this first look footage, the troubling rumors are hearsay and that this one will be well worth the wait with de Armas executing a variety of lethal MMA and Gun Fu with a more “feral and less polished” tone to it. Ballerina is also said to be “insanely violent” which does bode well for those skeptical of this one due to all the behind-the-scenes issues. From my experience, just because a movie has issues while filming doesn’t mean it’ll be bad and Stahelski stepping in can only make it better. I’m still pumped for it and whatever Stahelski and crew have for future John Wick entries and spin-offs. Bring on the hyper-violence and combat and CQB oriented ballet madness!
When will we see this trailer that showcased at CinemaCon? Well, with the release delay, it would most likely be far down the road, but you never know. I think they should release this early teaser this year to excite fans for next year. They did it for Mission: Impossible so why not this one.
