After a few moderately successful films from Angelina Jolie and another failed attempt at a reboot, Amazon Prime Video has made a splash with the announcement that their upcoming adaptation of the bestselling video game Tomb Raider has found their Lara Croft.
According to the big blogs, Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner is now next in line to play the iconic treasure hunting heroine in Prime’s upcoming series. It’s taken quite a while to get things rolling after several failed attempts but now Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who has been attached to the project from the very beginning, is all set to bring Lara Croft to life once more serving as creator, writer and executive producer of the ambitious project.

According to Deadline, Chad Hodge will serve as executive producer and co-showrunner besides Waller-Bridge, while Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief) will be series director and executive producer as well. It’s been three years since the first announcement with Waller-Bridge signing on and Turner actually tested for the role back in November of last year.
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge stated in the article. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Along with Jolie, Alicia Vikander also played the part in the last big screen interpretation, but the film wasn’t received at all with critics and audiences. That film was released back in 2018, and I actually enjoyed the stripped down, bare bones approach to the character and the lore.
The series won’t roll in front of cameras until January of next year so expect more casting and announcements to come.
