I think “restore the Snyderverse” is a tad DOA at this point as Zack Snyder, the much celebrated and maligned filmmaker, has attached himself to direct a smaller scale pic which is the UFC mixed martial arts flick titled Brawler. Along with White, HE Turki Alalshikh, who is Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia and the owner of The Ring Magazine, is also attached the the project.
Reports coming out of Variety day that Snyder is also co-writing the project along with long time collaborators Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. Snyder is wearing a lot of hats per usual as he will also produce with Deborah Snyder with via his Stone Quarry production banner, with Alalshikh and UFC Chief Content Officer Craig Borsari serving as executive producers on the film.
In terms of plot, Brawler looks to pay homage to the iconic boxing franchise Rocky with its depiction of a young MMA fighter battling his demons while on a collision course to fight for the coveted UFC championship.
In the article, Snyder was quoted as saying, “Behind every great fighter is the story of how they got there. UFC is the world leader in combat sports and I’m honored to be partnering with them to tell this incredible story.“
HE Turki Alalshikh waa also quoted saying, “I’ve been a fan of Zack’s work for years, his unique style – from his iconic action sequences to his sweeping visuals and intensely emotional storytelling – coupled with his humanized portrayal of deeply-flawed characters is singular, I couldn’t think of a better person to partner with to bring the UFC to the big screen. The Ring Magazine, with its 103-year legacy, will support to ensure the project’s success.”
White brought up the rear with the quotes by adding, “HE Turki Alalshikh and Zack Snyder have a shared vision to create a film about UFC. They are both very passionate about this project to show fans what it takes to become a UFC champion. It’s an incredibly ambitious project and I look forward to seeing it come to life.
The official synopsis for Brawler reads: “Rising from the rough streets of Los Angeles, a young fighter gets a shot at a UFC championship, battling his inner demons as he fights for redemption.”
Snyder has been looking to direct a smaller scale film and this type of fighting sports film is perfect. It will also be interesting to see how Snyder’s visual style and flair will culminate in the creation of the Octagon centered action design.
Casting is underway I’m sure so lock n load right here for more to come!
