What’s better than one teacher? Well two of course and that’s what fans are getting as Jackie Chan and O.G. Karate Kid Ralph Maachio are teaming up to train a new generation of student in Ben Wang as the second trailer has officially hit for Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends. Cobra Kai might have ended but the blockbuster franchise is alive and kicking and adding an icon like Chan back into the mix is the stuff of legends. Tie on those bandannas, trim those Banzai trees and watch the new trailer now!
In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.
Joshua Jackson (Fatal Attraction) and Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian) star as well along with Sadie Stanley (Cruel Summer) who is the new Ali. Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) directs this time from a script penned by Rob Lieber (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day).
Takeaways thus far is it will be interesting to see where this settles in the timeline of Cobra Kai with Maachio’s Daniel and if that even factors into the cannon. This might be its own separate thing which would serve its purpose as well. The plot is standard though with a new Daniel having to tussle with a new Johnny, but the action design is definitely a cut above with Wang being an avid practitioner of the arts. I, for one, would approve this entry to be another entity in the universe while ignoring the events of the hit Netflix series.

Karate Kid: Legends was supposed to originally hit theaters on June 7th, 2024, but the actors and writers strikes affected that date. Sony had felt that a late 2024 release in 2024 might have been better but then the Cobra Kai series was broken into three parts and the studio didn’t want to confuse audiences with a simultaneous release. We only have a few months to check it out finally.
