I knew there was a reason I didn’t initially post about James Bond star Daniel Craig enlisting for the live action adaptation of the DC Comics inspired Sgt. Rock film. After all, even though Craig has starred in period war films before, I never thought he was really the right choice to play the battle-hardened warrior of WWII. It seems my prayers have been answered as THR is reporting that Craig has opted to not star in the movie after all.
The boring excuse they are giving is that there are scheduling conflicts due to his wife fellow Hollywood A lister Rachel Weisz. There are more juicier rumors to be had though as some are saying Craig was disillusioned with the role due to the fact that this would have reunited him with his Queer director Luca Guadagnino. It seems that Craig is reportedly unhappy with the underperformance of that film at the box office as well as the awards races, so he is abandoning ship and distancing himself from the filmmaker. Any way you look at it, Craig is out, and the race is on to find a new, and hopefully better, actor to covet the role.

The script was also written by Guadagnino’s Challengers and Queer scribe Justin Kuritzkes and is based on the iconic DC Comics Sgt. Rock who is a fierce and indestructible WWII leader of the brigade Easy Company. Sgt. Rock has been one of DC Comics longest running series and has acquired a legion of fans ever since it came out in 1959.
I have read the comic upon occasion when I was growing up and there have been many attempts to bring this adored character to life with this version coming the closest. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached to play the role once. Personally, I think Reacher star Alan Ritchson would be perfect for the role as he looks the part, is hot in demand right now and showed us that he could kill hordes of Nazis in the exceptional Guy Ritchie movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Come on DC Studios, make it happen!
