Rumors that have been circling since earlier this year have finally found traction as it is now official with Suicide Squad alum Jared Leto, who will also be seen in the upcoming Tron: Ares, will be playing the latest incarnation of Skeletor in Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe. The news comes with additional villain casting news as a host of others have been named including Sam C. Wilson (House of the Dragon) who will play Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson (Game of Thrones) is cast as Goat Man, and Kojo Attah (In the Grey) is Tri-Klops.
Bumblebee director Travis Knight is set to helm and Leto joins actor Nicholas Galitzine (Bottoms) who won the coveted role of Prince Adam/He-Man earlier this year. Galitzine once again looks to be an unpopular choice with fans, but it still feels like this film is a far-off reality to be blunt.
Other noteworthy casting additions have included Camila Mendes (Riverdale) playing Teela, and Alison Brie (Community) who will play Skeletor’s evil doer Evil-Lyn. Just last month, it was named that MCU and DC alum Idris Elba has been attached to play He-Man’s right hand comrade Man-At-Arms. In the lore that includes the toy line and subsequent cartoon, Man-At-Arms is the weapons master for Eternia and He-Man’s right-hand man in his battle against the dreaded Skeletor. Elba is a sensational pick, and he brings a lot of cred to the project that this one surely does need. After all, Elba was in the Thor MCU films so he should fit right in here.
Leto also offers solid action cred as the star and musician has won an Oscar along with infamously portraying what some consider to be the worse live action adaptation of The Joker in Director David Ayer’s much maligned Suicide Squad. Leto is a solid choice in my eyes and I’m one to say that Frank Langella’s take on Skeletor in Cannon Films’s 1987 version will be hard to surpass but Leto certainly has the potential to do it.
The synopsis for Master of the Universe reads: “The film will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!” Other plot details are still under lock and key, but we do know that the film is a Escape Artists and Mattel Films production with Robbie Brenner, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch serving as producers.
Say what you will, and hardcore fans won’t be easily swayed but hopefully they get this right and honor the legacy of the property and the characters we all know and love. Kevin Smith’s direct sequel to the original cartoon that hit Netflix was very much maligned and it divided fans so we will see if the powers that be actually give us a decent film. Personally, even though it’s cheesy, I’m one of the huge fans of Cannon Films’ live action movie that starred Dolph Lundgren. Sure, it took liberties with the source material, but it still remained faithful to the look and tone of the OG IP.
At any rate, Masters of the Universe is still set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026, so we still have a long wait to see anything noteworthy.
