Will the live action adaptation of Masters of the Universe ever get made? At this point, there’s be so many start-stops that one has to wonder that even with the latest casting news, this movie is well off into the future. Yes, Bumblebee director Travis Knight is set to helm and yes, we have our He-Man in actor Nicholas Galitzine (Bottoms), who once again looks to be an unpopular choice with fans, but it still feels like this film is a far-off reality to be blunt.
Well, today we have some Intel that may just be the kick in the ass that this project needs as it’s being reported that Idris Elba is in active and final negotiations to star in the film as Duncan who is more famously known as Man-At-Arms. In the lore that includes the toy line and subsequent cartoon, Man-At-Arms is the weapons master for Eternia and He-Man’s right-hand man in his battle against the dreaded Skeletor. Elba is a sensational pick, and he brings a lot of cred to the project that this one surely does need. After all, Elba was in the Thor MCU films so he should fit right in here.
Other noteworthy casting additions announced earlier have been Camila Mendes (Riverdale) playing Teela, and Alison Brie (Community) who will play Skeletor’s evil doer Evil-Lyn. Skeletor has not been cast yet, and we wait to hear who else will joining the film and what other iconic characters will be added.
The synopsis for Master of the Universe reads: “The film will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!” Other plot details are still under lock and key, but we do know that the film is a Escape Artists and Mattel Films production with Robbie Brenner, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch serving as producers.
Say what you will, and hardcore fans won’t be easily swayed but hopefully they get this right and honor the legacy of the property and the characters we all know and love. Kevin Smith’s direct sequel to the original cartoon that hit Netflix was very much maligned and it divided fans so we will see if the powers that be actually give us a decent film. Personally, even though it’s cheesy, I’m one of the huge fans of Cannon Films’ live action movie that starred Dolph Lundgren. Sure, it took liberties with the source material, but it still remained faithful to the look and tone of the OG IP.
At any rate, Masters of the Universe is still set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026, so we still have a long wait to see anything noteworthy.
