Director Adam Wingard definitely enhanced the Monsterverse aster it was basically on life support after Godzilla King of the Monsters failed to deliver a Kaiju enhanced pummeling at the box office. With the franchise readying to disappear into middle earth, Wingard, who also helmed some great genre fare like The Guest, swooped in, teamed Godzilla up with King Kong and the rest as they say is history.

Unfortunately Wingard has stepped down from the Monsterverse leaving fans in disarray as to who can take up the mantle. It appears that Legendary has found said director in Grant Sputore who recently helmed the Hilary Swank sci-fi thriller I am Mother. Is this a good fit for the ever loving stomping monsters of the universe we hold dear. Well, only time will tell but at least Sputore has a proven track record and has sat in the director’s chair for sci-fi genre appeal.

The plot for the next Godzilla/Kong outing is too secret right now but we do know that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse scribe Dave Callaham has been enlisted to pen the script.
Wingard is now onto other things as he has been tapped to direct Onslaught for A24. Wingard, as we all know, directed 2022’s Godzilla vs. Kong and left on a massive high note having helmed the enormous hit Godzilla x Kong: New Empire. The 2022 film stomped in and resurrected a pandemic bleak cinema with its $470 million haul at the box office, and Godzilla x Kong: New Empire has decimated the competition even further with a King’s ransom of $567.5 million plus at the worldwide box office.
The latest Monsterverse entry is a rare example I’m afraid at the box office as audiences just aren’t gravitating to the theaters this year lol Lin the past pre-COVID. Recent flicks like The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga have failed to deliver a punch at the box office and have underperformed. It appears that fans are just fine with waiting at home for these movies to hit streaming just a few weeks after release so who knows what the future holds. Maybe we need Godzilla and Kong more than ever.
Time will tell…
