When the 2016 thriller The Accountant starring Ben Affleck first hit, I was unaware of just how awesome a movie it was. It was truly one of the best sleeper hits I have ever seen, and it also starred a pre-Punisher Jon Bernthal in an equally rad role as well playing Affleck’s highly trained and dangerous brother. Affleck crafted one of the most unique anti-heroes in action cinema with his portrayal of Christian Wolff, a highly skilled CPA with autism who just happens to also be a forensic accountant for several nefarious criminal organizations. The film was more thriller than action, but the adrenaline beats that it had were sensational with a rousing finale featuring a great firefight and hand to hand damage.
We have some good news today as the long talked about sequel is finally happening with Amazon MGM setting it up with Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity production banner. The news comes out of Deadline, and they are also reporting that Gavin O’Connor (who also helmed the near perfect MMA drama Warrior) is set to return to the director’s chair along with returning cast members Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons & Cynthia Addai-Robinson! Bill Dubuque, who penned the original, is back too.

Per Deadline: Bernthal played Christian’s security company operator brother Brax, with Simmons as Ray King, the Director of the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Addai-Robinson took on the role of Marybeth Medina, an up-and-coming Treasury agent tasked with unearthing The Accountant’s real identity.
The sequel’s plot is thrust into motion when Medina’s former boss is killed by unknown assassins, and she’s forced to contact Christian to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax, Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive — all intent on putting a stop to their search.
Like I stated above, the first film was a welcome and unforeseen surprise to the action genre with Affleck creating arguably one of his best characters in film. Add in Bernthal who tier one in any film let alone action and this is a rapid fire hit in the making. The supporting cast of Simmons and Addai-Robinson is just icing on the cake.
