Best known for slaying it as Selene in the Underworld franchise, actress Kate Beckinsale has never shied away from action cinema since that series of films unfortunately ended on a cliffhanger. Most recently Beckinsale has starred in several action pics such as Wild Cat, Canary Black, Stolen Girl and Jolt and she’s not slowing down anytime soon.
Deadline is bringing word that Beckinsale is going tactical once again for a new action-thriller titled Drifter which saddles her with a strong supporting cast that includes Dermot Mulroney, Robert Knepper & Rapper Sticky Fingaz (which I actually interviewed a while back). The film is already filming and what makes this one a little cooler is that the cameras are rolling in my hometown of Northeast Ohio!
The plot for Drifter reads, “Set in a quiet Midwestern town, Drifter “follows Wendy Ford, an interim police chief determined to prove she’s worthy of her late father’s badge. After arresting a mysterious drifter with a hidden past, Wendy finds herself trapped inside her isolated police station when impostors posing as FBI agents and a heavily armed mercenary team launch a deadly assault to free one of her prisoners. Forced into an uneasy alliance with the enigmatic stranger, Wendy must uncover the truth behind the attack before her town, and everyone inside the station, is wiped out.”
Yes, upon reading said synopsis, the film certainly takes its cues from the iconic Assault on Precinct 13 from prolific genre filmmaker John Carpenter but that is never a bad thing as most action films pay homage somewhere. Seeing Beckinsale go full auto on the bad guys might just be the spark that we need at this point.
Drifter is being helmed by veteran DTV action filmmaker Randall Emmett. The movie also stars Bill Sage, Beau Bommarito, Ema Horvath, Maia Kai, and entrepreneur and media personality John Cerasani. Drifter is currently live with filming, like I said, in my old stomping grounds of Northeast Ohio including Cleveland so if anything, it’ll be cool to point out locales I know and love so it’s cool to see my hometown getting some royal Hollywood treatment.
Beckinsale is an exceptional actress, and she has legit action cred for what will surely be a white knuckle, grounded and brutal actioner. Dermor Mulroney is solid as well and has been doing the action thing as well with films like Ruthless from action director and coordinator Art Camacho. Thrown in Prison Break’s Robert Knepper who always oozes villainous charm and Sticky Fingaz who never fails to deliver the over the top the atrics and this one should be a potent little thriller. Plus, Sticky was Blade and I did enjoy that train wreck of a series.
