Hot Take Incoming! I think the late, great Albert Pyun’s Kickboxer 2 (AKA Kickboxer 2: The Road Back) is a better overall film then the classic JCVD film that proceeded it. Now take in account that I love the original film and that it showcases Van Damme’s onscreen fighting prowess and it elevated his martial arts/action star status that Bloodsport launched. Now with the sequel, which saw Sasha Mitchell taking over as the estranged brother Sloan, the follow up doesn’t necessarily reach the martial arts heights of the first film but as a whole, it’s a more defining DTV action effort that combines heart, drama and savage martial arts action into one classic title. Plus, Michel Qissi was back as the menacing and depraved Tong Po which added legit action cred to the sequel along with Dennis Chan who returned as the lovable Xian who trains David like he did Kurt.
With all that said, Lionsgate Limited has officially announced that Kickboxer 2 is set to receive the royalty treatment on Blu-Ray with a special from its signature Vestron Collectors Series that includes new artwork, a brand-new transfer and a whole bevy of special feature goodness. Check out the specs and intel for the upcoming hot release below!

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS
Mr. Sangha, the Thai government official who handles Tong Po, a brutal kickboxer, wishes for Tong Po to have another opportunity to fight against Kurt Sloan and vindicate himself. However, in a fit of rage Tong Po kills Kurt and deprives himself of the opportunity to face him again. When they hear of David, Kurt’s brother who owns a kickboxing gym in Los Angeles, they manipulate him into a match for Tong Po to regain his honor.

I’m not doing an official review of Kickboxer 2 here, but I will probably do something closer to the release of this special edition. Back in the day to today, I have always loved this entry in the Kickboxer franchise and thought that Sasha Mitchell brought a new take on the martial arts action hero. he was likable, grounded, humble and above all adapt at the fighting and believed that he was also solid in the two other films he did even if the quality went down from here. The action was serviceable and bone crunching and merging the brutality with weighty human drama was a stellar move.
