If you haven’t been paying attention, Hollywood icon Russell Crowe is looking action hero ready for his appearance in the upcoming Highlander reboot. Crower sent a pic of his bodybuilding aesthetic last week and one has to ask if the star has multiple action films in his future after he battles to be the one with Henry Cavill.
Well, ask no more as Crowe is set to unite with Priyanka Chopra Jonas for a new sci-fi actioner from Predators director Nimród Antal. The upcoming pic is called Bluefly and it sort of sounds Predator-Esque as a spec ops unit finds more than they bargained for while mounting a black ops mission deep in the Congo baby. Cue the sequences of retro style warriors unleashing mass amounts of ammo as they are picked off one by one! “Get to Da Choppa!”
Per Deadline: The synopsis reads: “Deep in the Congo, a grieving UN translator is pulled onto a black-ops mission to recover a downed aircraft that isn’t supposed to exist. As a Special Operations team pushes upriver through militia-held territory, the recovery becomes a descent — and the closer they get to the craft, the clearer it becomes that they were never meant to bring it home.”
Antal helms from a script penned by written by David Frigerio (Beast), William Eubank (Underwater) and Carlyle Eubank (Muzzle).
“Bluefly is an intense, character-driven thriller wrapped inside a bold science-fiction premise.It’s the kind of film I live to make — grounded, propulsive, and full of dread — and I couldn’t ask for a better cast or team to bring it to the screen,” Antal was quoted in the article.
I have thoughts. Bluefly sounds like a film that could indeed pay homage to the aforementioned classic starring Arnold as well as any of these types of films that were at the video stores back in the day. Will Crowe be put into action or will he be the guy back at base yelling at the unit through comms? No idea but I think it would a massive win for the film if he does go tactical but I’m sure Chopra Jonas will get down and dirty as she is most likely the grieving UN translator who unfortunately gets deployed on this eventual suicide mission. We all know that the actress can carry action having starred in Heads of State as well as The Bluff where she was basically a period era John Wick with bladed weaponry. All I know is, someone better yell “Get to Da Choppa!” when all is said and done.
Bluefly is launching presales at this year’s TIFF. With the involved two leads, I’m sure this one will be devoured by distribution with little problem. The sci-fi actioner is being produced by Michael Jefferson for Polite Society, David Frigerio for Broken Open Pictures, Deborah Glover for G2 Dispatch, Arianne Fraser and Delphine Perrier for Highland Film Group, and Vanessa Yao Guo. Executive producers on the film are Lia Buman, Guy Davies, RuthAnne Frigerio, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Jason Kringstein, Katie Leary, Scott Levenson and James Norbury.
