Although it faded away just as fast as it came out, Sylvester Stallone’s obscure dark superhero tale Samaritan is warranting a follow up as it was announced today via THR. A victim of the pandemic, Samaritan was at one time supposed to be a theatrical release but, just like many films of that time period, it was dumped onto amazon Prime as an original feature. It’s too bad really as Sly served up an original take on the tired superhero trope with a more down and grittier affair of a hero who is washed up only to see salvation at the hands of a young boy who still believes.
Bragi F. Schut, who wrote the original Stallone superhero movie, has been enlisted to write the follow up as well. Amazon MGM Studios is once again producing and funding the film which will see Sly return to his role. Stallone will once again serve as a producer via his Balboa Productions along with partner Braden Aftergood. Stallone made the deal made before the actors’ strike took place so we will see if this truly takes flight seeing as Hollywood is at a standstill with many high-profile pics like Deadpool 3 and Mission: Imposible- Dead Reckoning Part 2 announcing delays in releases this week. many more are sure to follow so we shall keep you posted on this.

The original movie told the story of “a young boy who is saved from a beating by a sanitation worker. The boy comes to believe that the older man is a superhero who disappeared 20 years earlier, after an epic battle with his archenemies.” Upon release on August 26th of last year, Amazon did say that Samaritan overperformed for the streaming service and was the number one movie for three weeks in a row. Julius Avery helmed the first movie, but it is unclear who will direct this time around.
I endorsed the movie in my review saying that the film “balanced old school action and theatrics with the current superhero trend that we all have gotten accustomed too and that it checked the boxes it needed to and delivered.” For my full analysis of Samaritan, click here!
With Stallone saying goodbye to The Expendables this summer, maybe this will be his last franchise before he retires.
