I’ve been meaning to add more to my Comix Zone portion of the website but work and life have derailed that for a bit but I’m making strides to feature more comic book themed posts and what better way to ramp up this section of Action-Flix then by hyping up Skybound and Image Comics’ surprise GI JOE/Tomb Raider crossover! That’s right true believers; A Real American Hero is going tactical with the best Tomb Raider in the business in Lara Croft and she might just be the Joe’s newest secret weapon against Destro, The Baroness and Cobra. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero/Tomb Raider is written by Kyle Higgins (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and drawn by Elena Casagrande (Black Widow). The creative team also includes colorist Alex Guimarães (Invaders) and letterer Pat Brosseau (G.I Joe: A Real American Hero).
Spinning out of the events of issue #330, this new series pairs Lara Croft with Shipwreck and a team of Joes as they race to Cobra Island to track down a long-lost treasure. Standing in their way are The Baroness and Destro, who seek the treasure for themselves.
Spoiler Alert! Lara Croft has already made her surprise debut in issue 330 of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero. The events of that epic first meet spill over to the limited series that is set to debut this October. This pairing makes sense as Croft is as tactically efficient in modern warfare like the JOES and expect mass battles and countless rounds of ammo spent before this adventure wraps up. I think it’s a chef’s kiss to partner Croft up with Shipwreck as the two have lots in common and adventure and rewards is in both their DNA.
“Tomb Raider meets G.I. JOE. Lost artifact, a Destro plot, and a joint infiltration mission to Cobra Island– the appeal of a story like this should be obvious,” Higgins stated. “Having never had the opportunity to work with either, I was quite excited when Alex Antone called to ask me if I’d like to build an adventure for both. We’re taking some really fun swings with both brands–and there are definitely some deep cuts for G.I. JOE fans!”
Now having played the Tomb raider video games in my youth and being a fan of both the films and, of course, G.I. Joe, this team up is exactly what the fans have been looking for and making Croft an honorary member of the force is comic book fandom on overload.
“I’m extremely happy to have the chance to draw one of the top myths in my life: Lara Croft!” said Casagrande. “It will be epic to see her in this adventure with the G.I. JOE team, fighting to solve one of her iconic mysteries on Cobra Island! I’m looking forward to showing you more pages!”
