It was reported weeks back that a fifth Lethal Weapon film was indeed moving forward despite the death of franchise director Richard Donner. Series star Mel Gibson made the announcement and now we have further confirmation from the man that it is indeed on and that’ll he’ll also be helming the project along with returning as Martin Riggs.
While speaking with ET, Gibson stated: “Yeah, I am directing that. I’m really looking forward to it. I wish I wasn’t directing it. I wish Richard Donner was still here to do it but left us untimely, and he actually asked me, he said ‘Hey kid, if I don’t make it, you’ll take the reins, huh?’ I told him to shut up. I think it’s an honor for me to be able to carry the flag for him.”
“I called Danny [Glover] up, of course, and said ‘Hey, dude, is it okay with you if I direct this?’ He said yeah, let’s go.”
With Danny Glover’s statement, it would appear that both Riggs and Murtaugh aren’t too old for this shit and they have enough left in the tank for one more adventure.
“I know Danny’s going to pull it off real well, too. He’s kind of like the show pony in this one,” Gibson added.
It is being reported that Gibson will play an older Riggs (of course) and that there will be a “comedic bent” to it. Not so sure what that means as there was humor in all the films.
Personally, I thought the series ended perfectly with number 4 years ago so here’s hoping if this does happen, that it works out well. Stay tuned and keep it locked and loaded right here for more 411 as we are your destination for everything action in 2022 and beyond!
