I have been out of the loop when it comes to the casting cavalcade for the reboot of CAPCOM’s Street Fighter film but yesterday saw a big name enlist for the film which will be directed by Bad Trip helmer Kitao Sakurai. According to sources, Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal , who has made quite the splash in his native India with his Commando franchise, will play the role of Dhalsim in Legendary’s live-action redo.
The Street Fighter film will mark the Hollywood debut for Jammwal although reps for Legendary declined to comment like they have with each and every casting announcement. It would appear that Jammwal was very adamant about joining the movie and having this be his introduction to western audiences. Dhalsim was first introduced in Street Fighter II game back in 1991 and the character of Dalsim is a “yogi with fire-spitting abilities — a fundamentally peaceful man who fights to support his family.”

Jammwal joins an already stacked cast that includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile (although his announcement was not made official), Jason Momoa as Blanka, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and most recently Hirooki Goto as E. Honda.
Plot details for the new Street Fighter flick remain top secret but we all know that it will center around an eclectic band of martial arts warriors who engage in a street level tournament while at the same time taking on the elusive and shadowy Shadaloo organization run by the villainous M. Bison. Here’s hoping that this version on screen is more faithful to the game then the other failed attempts have been.
The casting so far has been met with divisive results from fans worldwide, but I think if done right, emphasis on right, this could be the Street Fighter film we have been all waiting for. Only time will tell but as of now, the movie lost it’s official release date which tells us that they are taking their time and hopefully making this the way it should be. Lock N Load and stay tuned…
