There can be only one! That’s only one co-star of course as Collider has brought exclusive word that Hollywood A Lister Russell Crowe is readying to join Henry Cavill in Chad Stahelski’s long delayed Highlander reboot. There is no word who Crowe will be playing in the film, but it is stated that it is “a key role opposite Cavill.”
Production is said to finally be moving for a fall shoot with Stahelski producing and helming the pic which will have and expanded scope and serve as more than just a reboot. Stahelski stated in another article with Collider that his Highlander will be more than a remake of the original classic and be more of a broader evolution of the franchise.
“We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong. There’s big opportunity for action… and it’s a bit of a love story — but not how you think,” Stahelski stated.

Stahelski has been pushing that his version will focus on characters and drama along with the sword swinging spectacle and Crowe’s announcement is the first in what is sure to be a long line of casting announcements made as filming gets closer. There are numerous choices that Crowe can play including the infamous Kurgan that Clancy Brown played magnificently in the original. There is also Macloed’s long time mentor of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez which was played by the legendary Sean Connery in the first two films. He could also be playing a brand-new immortal so we will have to wait and see like we’ve been doing for as long as this movie has been in development hell.
“My selling point to [Henry] was, look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years,” Stahelski told Collider. “He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc… and you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”
I’ve stated in the past that Cavill is perfect for the reimagined role of Connor Maclead as his swordsmanship skills are sick since he did The Witcher over at Netflix. Cavill’s skills along with Stahelski and 87Eleven’s second to none action design will most assuredly develop tier one fighting sequences with a new and fiercer flavor.
One thing is for sure and it’s that Crowe better yell “are you not entertained!” at some point in the film.
Stay tuned and lock n load for more to come!
