I’m still not a fan of AI and am one of the firm believers that The Terminator was a warning shot when it hit back in 1984, but I digress and with that, we have one huge announcement from China that will certainly spark controversy to ridiculous levels. According to the large trade publications.
During the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival, the China Film Foundation alomg with its partners announced two large scale AI-driven initiatives under the new Kung Fu Film Heritage Project. This initiative is a large-scale project that will reportedly restore 100 of China’s classic martial arts films using artificial intelligence, and with this, they also plan to make a brand-new animated feature that will reimagine John Woo’s iconic A Better Tomorrow which will be known as A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border. This reimagining is being billed as the world’s first fully AI-produced animated feature film. Insert your eye rolls and sighs here before I move on…OK…moving on.
According to Variety who broke the news: “The restoration project aims to digitally remaster 100 landmark kung fu films, using AI to enhance image, sound, and overall production quality while preserving the storytelling and aesthetic of the originals. Organizers described it as a long-term commitment to reviving the cultural and cinematic legacy of Chinese martial arts cinema.” This is similar to what other filmmakers like James Cameron has done to other classic films but sometimes the finished effort has been met with criticism and unhappiness in the execution and final result.
“From Bruce Lee to Jackie Chan, from ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ to ‘Wolf Warrior,’ these films have shown the world the vitality and spirit of the Chinese people,” said China Film Foundation chair Zhang Qilin. “They are our cinematic calling cards to the world.”
Among the 100 film that are slated for restoration are Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury and The Big Boss, Jet Li’s Once Upon a Time in China and Jackie Chan’s crowning achievement Drunken Master. Along with these title reveals, the event unveiled the premiere of A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border which is being billed as a futuristic reimaging of John Woo’s classic Chow Yun-Fat starring actioner. The movie was created by just a crew of 30 people with Quantum Animation and is being touted as the world’s first fully AI created motion picture. Oh dear.
“This entire animated feature was made by just 30 people,” said producer Zhang Qing. “AI has collapsed the barrier between creativity and execution. The production cycle has gone from years to months.”
Cyber Border is a proof of concept as to what AI can do and is being described as the dawn of a new age of Chinese storytelling. The movie combines martial arts, Gun Fu infused with “futuristic aesthetics, and new modes of production.”
Zhang also issued a challenge to all Chinese creators to expand their traditional IPs into interactive forms which includes “globally competitive fighting games.” “Why are the top fighting games not Chinese, when they all borrow Chinese moves? We should be building the next Street Fighter from our own legends—Wong Fei-hung, Nezha, and more.”
Zhang Tan also added, “Kung fu films are stories of growth, spirit, and honor. With AI, we’re not erasing history—we’re giving it a second wind.”
I’m going to try and wrap my head around all of this, but you can read more within the article at Variety. We all knew things like this were coming so it looks like there will be those that will embrace it while others fight against it tooth and nail. After all, this was a major point in the actors and writers strike a few years back. Buckle up because it’s going to be a bumpy ride into the future.
