Back in February of this year, Bad Trip‘s Kitao Sakurai was chosen to take over the director’s chair for the latest adaptation of Capcom’s iconic fighting game Street Fighter after Talk To Me‘s Danny & Michael Philippou dropped out of the project. The film was to have a 2026 release date but then Sony took the film off their release schedule making it look as if the project was dead for now.
Well, not so fast is the moral to this story as Deadline is dropping some massive casting news as genre favorites Andrew Koji (Warrior, Bullet Train), Jason Momoa (Fast X, A Minecraft Movie), Noah Centineo (Warfare) along with WWE superstar Roman Reigns (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) are being eyed to center the ring for the movie. All four actors are in talks to star at this point so nothing concrete as of yet but these names being thrown in are not little by any stretch of the imagination so it would appear that Sony is still hoping to get this movie off and running at some point.
Of course, all reps from the studio have declined to make any comment whatsoever with any plot details still being locked down as well. One thing is certain and that we are still a long way off from seeing anything from Street Fighter so it’s hard to get excited about anything at this point, even this casting news that isn’t solidified yet.
Around a month or so ago, there was speculation that Koji and Centineo were being eyed for the latest iteration, but I didn’t post anything as the sources were not reliable, but it would appear that some of this has weight if all the trades are reporting it today. Capcom, who is the developer and publisher of the video games is co-developing and co-producing the flick although there is no writer or other producer attached right now.
The film had secured a March 20, 2026 launch date, before it was pulled from the schedule, and I did say in my previous article that it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it didn’t speak well for the project at the time. What was clear was that Sony and Capcom wanted to go back to the drawing board after a few failed attempts at the property which included the tongue in cheek 1994 version with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late, great Raul Julia in his final role. The film does hold a special place in the hearts of fans everywhere, but it isn’t a true adaptation of the game source material. We won’t even speak of 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which was a grittier turn for the I.P.
I do believe that we will see Street Fighter energize cinema screens again, or maybe smaller screens via streaming and this latest bit of news is giving fans hope that a good adaptation is out there waiting to be seen. The video game remains one of the hottest ones around with a loyal fan base, so I feel we have to be extra patient to get what we finally want in the end. These actors are certainly a step in the right direction if they indeed accept to star in the movie.

A worthy John Wick game needsfluid movement and accurate gunplay. Nailing that core sensation matters more than faithfullyrecreating the plot. […]
