We’re heading into the weekend and it’s a new year so I thought I would resurrect the Weekly Intel Recap and highlight action and martial arts icon Donnie Yen as the living legend in action cinema is currently a red-hot commodity with the release of his The Prosecutor this weekend. Don’t take it the wrong way, Yen is always a hot commodity, but this weekend sees the release of what is arguably one of his best film outputs ever in terms of action design as well as heavy doses of the dramatic stuff. For my full analysis of the movie (which Yen shared on his stories page on social media) take a look below!
Just for the sake of visual confirmation, I have added the below image for your viewing enjoyment.

This is actually the second time Yen has shared my review as he also put my article on Raging Fire on his X (Twitter) page when it was released.
In other Donnie Yen news, the star has been making the rounds to talk about the new movie and actually my action brother in arms Eoin over at The Action Elite got the highest honor to speak with him for the film. Check out his exclusive chat with Donnie Below!
OK, now on to the news. In a few interviews with some of those huge blogs that don’t even support Donnie like us little guys, Yen delivered some pretty cool news along with some pretty depressing news that we all knew was coming.
First up, in a chat with the Steve Weintraub at Collider, Yen mentioned how there might be an opportunity for him to actually helm the John Wick spin-off film he is set to star in as his character of Caine. The regular series of films were all helmed by Chad Stahelski, but I figure he would not have a problem stepping aside to let a master of action like Donnie do his thing. Check out Donnie’s comments below!
“I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we’ll see,” Yen said. “I don’t know, Steve. I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We’ll see what happens.”
“But at the same time, I hold responsibility as well as a pressure that I don’t want to ruin the franchise,” Yen added. “I try to do my best to bring something fresh to the franchise itself. I don’t want to bring down the expectations for the fans. I try to do my best, like always.”

To add fuel to Yen’s comments, it is also being confirmed that Stahelski is on board with this making it almost a slam dunk. This would be Yen’s North American directorial debut to boot.
In the other sad bit of press, Donnie also finally put the long-delayed video game adaptation Sleeping Dogs to rest as he has confirmed that it is indeed a DOA project. Yen tried to keep the movie alive for quite some time but in the end the cards and planets did not align.
“I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights,” Yen stated to Polygon.
“I waited for years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing. Well, on to better things.”

I did get cautiously optimistic a few years back when Donnie started teasing the project again on social media, but I had a feeling that not even Donnie Yen could make it happen. Subsequently, his movie Special I.D. is sort of a Sleeping Dogs movie as his character is a lot like the one in the video game so at least we have that one to watch even if it’s not one of his strongest outputs.
If you have the chance to see The Prosecutor on the big screen this weekend, then do it. Witnessing Donnie do his signature thing on the biggest screen possible is a definitive must. It’s only January but I have a feeling that this one will be on our minds when we talk about the best action films of 2025.
