Why mess around with classics. Even imperfect, there’s a certain level of charm to past iconic films so why restore them and risk losing what made them dear to fans? We saw it multiple times with George Lucas ruining the classic Star Wars films. Han shot first a**holes. Even when I watch the restored version, I still see the original in my head and making one of my most favorite characters less bad ass is totally unacceptable. AI is helping restore countless older films and James Cameron is well on that bandwagon having already dusted off his films Aliens and True Lies. The latter was much maligned with its 4K AI rendering by fans for being way to smooth. Seeing these classics on the big screen with the best sound and visuals possible is always a treat but at what cost when the finished product almost looks fake and noticing all the touch ups literally takes you out of the picture.
Well, Cameron is at it again and this time he’s taking on The Terminator which hits theaters this week on July 25th and fans are already bracing for the worse when it comes to the AI restoration of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic sci-fi actioner. At any rate, fans who get the opportunity to watch this gem will make the final call when it hits this Thursday, Check out the new key art below!

Official Synopsis: Disguised as a human, a cyborg assassin known as a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Sent to protect Sarah is Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), who divulges the coming of Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will spark a nuclear holocaust. Sarah is targeted because Skynet knows that her unborn son will lead the fight against them. With the virtually unstoppable Terminator in hot pursuit, she and Kyle attempt to escape.
Not that you need reminding, the original film starred Schwarzenegger along with Linda Hamilton, Micheal Biehn, Lance Henriksen, the late/great Bill Paxton, and the equally late/great Dick Miller. The franchise has spawned five sequels with the second feature Terminator: Judgement Day considered one of the best action and sci-fi films of all time. There have also been novels, comic books, animation and Netflix is unveiling the ANIME series Terminator Zero next month.
The original Terminator has always been my favorite, flaws and all and I consider Cameron’s take on the future war at the beginning one of the best that has not been equaled since. It had everything including horror elements, breakneck action sequences and unforgettable characters leading to one of the finest examples of genre filmmaking ever. How will this new version hold up. Well, check it out on Thursday if it’s playing near you to discover the answer.
