Come on now. You all knew this was coming and especially with the stinger scene at the end of John Wick Chapter 4 dealing with his character of Caine. Donnie Yen has enlisted for a spin-off film based on his popular assassin who appeared in the last entry. Yen brought even more ferocious action to the set pieces in a franchise that is highly regarded for transforming the action cinema landscape.
THR is reporting that the action/martial arts icon will star in the untitled spin-off and that a director is forthcoming as Lionsgate hunts down potential candidates. Franchise director and action maestro Chad Stahelski is developing the movie for Yen which is part of Stahelski’s deal with Lionsgate to expand the John Wick universe. Ballerina with Ana de Armas is currently set for a June 2025 release after being delayed for additional action shoots to enhance the movie’s adrenaline element.

We’ll just call the film the Untitled Caine movie and the script is being written by Robert Askins with a 2025 production set with Hong Kong to be the filming location. There is no plot as of yet but the report is saying that the spin-off will be centered on events after the last movie with Caine being freed from The High Table.
“Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil and Erica push themselves to create action, fights and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role,” Yen said in an official statement in the article.
From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an inedible mark and had fans asking for more,” Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added.
Expect Stahelski to be heavily involved with the movie after having to come in and save Ballerina and that movie’s action sequences. It makes sense to have Stahelski be an advisor even if he isn’t in the director’s chair. You can also expect tier one action design with Yen in the movie and he will definitely be involved with the choreography of the action scenes. Yen will probably be involved with picking the stunt team and Stahelski’s 87Eleven banner never disappoints. I expect great things from this one. Lock n Load for more to follow!
