I feel like we’ve been talking about Vin Diesel finally doing Riddick: Furya for as long as we’ve been talking about Chad Stahelski doing Highlander. Diesel’s latest chapter in his other successful franchise has been in development hell for years but there is a light at the end of the tunnel as official word has finally come down that cameras will roll this August for the fourth film in Diesel’s epic sci-fi series. Aside from living life a quarter mile at a time in his billion-dollar blockbuster Fast & Furious franchise, Riddick is probably a far second in terms of popularity with fans.
Deadline has given genre fans what they’ve been waiting for in that Riddick: Furya has just locked a production start date on August 26th of this year. The news was delivered as current F&F director Louis Leterrer confirmed that the eleventh and final Fast & Furious movie will not film until sometime next year which gives Diesel the window of opportunity to finally make his passion project fourth installment.
The official plot for Riddick: Furya reads, “Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.” The new entry will also see Diesel reunite with director, David Twohy once again who has served as helmer and writer for the Riddick series.

Just to show you how long the development for Furya has been, Diesel teased concept art on his official Instagram page last year to help fans get excited for the new film. You can see that post with Diesel as Riddick below. Pitch Black was the original and most creative entry of the series back in 2000 and it premiered Diesel’s Riddick character with an ensemble as they waged war on a hostile planet against monovalent alien creatures that thrive in the dark. The series went bigger and badder with more maligned results with The Chronicles of Riddick, and that overblown entry suffered to make a dent at the box office back in 2004. The third film, Riddick, which hit a long time later in 2013 took the franchise back to its more savage and simplistic roots with a tighter budget and did well for being a smaller effort. The franchise has expanded since then to include an ANIME short film called The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury and there are even three video games based off the IP which include The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, and Riddick: The Merc Files.
