Did I call this one or what?! Once I heard that Lionsgate was filling the vacant spot that Ballerina left in June with The Crow putting it on a collision course with Sony’s Bad Boys Ride or Die, I stated that this will certainly change. I was right and Lionsgate is not playing chicken with detectives Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett as deadline is saying that the newest vision of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgard is now set to hit theaters on August 23rd. The film was set to open up against Bady Boys on June 7th but now we will wait longer to see if this latest entry in The Crow franchise is any good.
The new August release date will now have The Crow going up against Blink Twice which is the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz for Amazon MGM. Oh yeah, there’s another film you never heard of opening up on that same day which is called The Forge, a faith based film from The Kendrick Brothers. Clearly this competition or lack there of was the reasoning behind Lionsgate moving The Crow as it would most likely get swallowed up by Sony’s Bad Boys fourth outing. With the new date and no real competition, it’ll be interesting to see if this version of The Crow has any wings.
The Crow, based on the original graphic novel by James O’Barr, follows soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs), who are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right. Danny Huston also stars. (Per Deadline)
