I was debating whether to share the trailer for The Joker: Folie à Deux which sees Joaquin Phoenix return as a more grounded and realistic version of DC’s iconic clown prince of crime. I wasn’t a particular fan of the first one and to this day, I’m really not sure where they want to go with these movies but alas, here is the sequel which sees actress and recording artist sensation Lady Gaga coming in as a new and improved Harley Quinn. These films aren’t action oriented but I guess since every one else is showcasing it then so will I.
Todd Phillips, who helmed the original, is back in the director’s chair with additional cast members including Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey. Zazie Beetz reprises her role of Sophie Dumond from the first film. There is definitely a musical vibe here and one could maybe call it a musical of sorts but there’s no denying that they are going for something completely different here. There are no connections to the defunct DCEU or James Gunn’s forthcoming DCU as this Joker is entirely a standalone event. In other words, don’t expect Gotham’s Caped Crusader to swoop in anytime soon with this one.
Plot details are still sketchy but from the trailer it appears that Arthur and Harley form a unique bond when they meet in Arkham Asylum. When they firmly realize their undying love for each other, Harley and Arthur execute a jailbreak to the crescendo of music in the foreground. Upon escaping, they proceed to reign havoc and mass chaos upon Gotham City.
