The road to get Road House, the 2024 reimagining that is, to a release has been a rocky one to say the least. First, there was several different versions of the project that were scrapped over the years including a version that would have starred Ronda Rousey at one time and now there’s AI rearing its ugly head into the mix. It appears that the original writer of the 1989 film named R. Lance Hill (who writes his scripts under the surname of David Lee Henry) is suing the new movie saying that the filmmakers used AI to replicate voices for actors while in post-production during the SAG-AFTRA strike and that his petition which was filed with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2021 for all copyright of the film to return to him when United Artists’ copyright expired in November 2023 was basically ignored. Let’s not forget the whole why didn’t the movie hit theaters instead of just streaming. Yeah, it’s a mess but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. It just means it has bad mojo.
Well, let’s set all the hostility and negativity aside and talk about the actual movie which looks pretty damn good and unveils a new poster for it showcasing stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor sizing each other up and staring each other down before they throw down and gets primal. It is literally the calm before the storm, and you can scroll down below to check them out!

Going back to Hill’s lawsuit for a moment, he is seeking to have the movie blocked from release and is, of course, also seeking declaratory relief. Amazon MGM Studios is calling the lawsuit frivolous and “without merit.” This is a pretty wild claim by Hill, and I don’t think anything will come of it, but it does put another black eye (see what I did there?) on the film that has already had an uphill battle to get made.
Enough of that. Road House still looks like an R rated and violent good time while showing respect to the Patrick Swayze starring original and I feel if this movie is viewed on its own and not in relation to the 1989 pic, audiences might just enjoy it for what it is. A decent distraction for around 2 hours.
Road House was helmed by The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman and is a reimagining of the 1989 cult classic and will involve Gyllenhaal as a former and disgraced UFC fighter who, while down on his luck, takes a job as a bouncer at bar located in the Florida Keys. It’s anything but a tropical paradise however as Dalto soon discovers that there is a criminal conspiracy afoot that will lead to a climatic showdown.
The film hits Amazon Prime on March 21st!
