Say what you will about this latest incarnation of CAPCOM’s beloved Street Fighter game, but the latest live action adaptation is certainly assembling an eclectic cast for the film which will now see prominent character actor David Dastmalchian (Life of Chuck, The Suicide Squad) taking on the role of the big bad M. Bison. Played magnificently by the late, great Raul Julia in the tongue in cheek 1994 version with JCVD, M. Bison is the leader of the secret Shadaloo organization which sees fighters from all over the world banning together to help take down.
According to Deadline, “it’s the biggest role to date for the actor, who’s now been working consistently for nearly 20 years, and marks another big leap forward, following his strong marks earned for starring in the buzzy horror film Late Night with the Devil.”
Dastmalchian joins an already fierce ensemble of warriors that includes Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, Orville Peck and most recently Callina Jeung, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Andrew Schulz. Bad Trip‘s Kitao Sakurai is helming the pic which sees him taking over for the brotherly directing duo of who dropped out of the project last year.
The film had secured a March 20, 2026, launch date, before it was pulled from the schedule, and I did say in my previous article that it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it didn’t speak well for the project at the time. What was clear was that Sony and Capcom wanted to go back to the drawing board after a few failed attempts at the property which included the tongue in cheek 1994 version with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late, great Raul Julia in his final role. The film does hold a special place in the hearts of fans everywhere, but it isn’t a true adaptation of the game source material. We won’t even speak of 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which was a grittier turn for the I.P.
It looks like Legendary who has refused to comment on any of these casting announcements is going all in on the ensemble group and this will definitely be the Street Fighter film to watch when it finally hits. Plot details are secret right now but it will most assuredly follow M. Bison and his Shadaloo army and the street fighters who band together to wage war on him to stop his global threats.
I don’t think it was a coincidence that this was announced on a Tuesday either. No one can forget Raul Julia’s epic and iconic “but for me, it was Tuesday” line. What a genius move to say the least. This has to be a homage to Julia who sadly passed away after filming his role.
I feel that there will be much more to report on Street Fighter in the near future so lock n load and follow us right here for all the latest!
