It is now Friday and with it I am catching up on some of the action news that I missed out on throughout this past week. One story I did write on when it was first announced which is Guy Ritchie’s involvement in the sequel to Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House reboot while the second piece of intel is brand new and involves MCU alum and action star Chris Hemsworth boarding a new submarine action pic titled Subversion which sounds very cool. With out any more delay, lets sink into it!
Guy Ritchie Officially Boards Road House 2 Reuniting with Star Jake Gyllenhaal!

First reported on April 5th of last month but not solid until now, we can now officially confirm that prolific filmmaker Guy Ritchie will indeed direct the sequel to Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House reboot or reimagining however you want to look at it for Amazon MGM. Ritchie and Gyllenhaal have a great working relationship having done the stellar war movie Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant as well as the upcoming action-thriller In the Grey, which also stars Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez, so that is probably factoring into the decision. Hopefully, if Ritchie does direct, he will bring the necessary wink and nudge to this film that it beckons for.
This will be the third film the two will have collaborated on with Will Beall penning the script. I’m really hoping that they add in what made the original so special and even though Swayze’s version was made in the more unapologetic era of the 80’s, I think there’s enough of us left in today’s society that would enjoy a little unabashed brawling.
Ritchie steps in for director Doug Liman, who expressed frustration over the streaming release of the original “Road House” movie. Last year, Liman told IndieWire that his discontent stemmed from not being properly compensated as “Road House” was initially conceived as a theatrical release for MGM, but distribution changed when MGM was acquired by Amazon. Amazon previously indicated the film was greenlit for streaming. (Per Variety)
Gyllenhaal’s first foray as Elwood Dalton wasn’t a bad movie and did have its moments especially the climatic tussle between Gyllenhaal and MMA champ Conor McGregor, but it was missing all the fun that the late, great Patrick Swayze brought to the original. In my review on The Action Fix Podcast, I stated that the movie was Ok but ultimately forgettable when all is said and done but hopefully Ritchie, now that he is fully on board for the project, will get the assignment and give fans what they want even if they didn’t ask for it in the first place. We shall see.
Check out the inaugural episode of The Center the Ring where we debated both versions of the film and which one we thought was better. Spoiler Alert (Not Really), it was the original.
Chris Hemsworth Boards New Submarine Thriller SUBVERSION for Amazon MGM!

This second slice of Intel also has to deal with Amazon MGM who is responsible for the Road House reboot films as MCU alum and current go to action guy Chris Hemsworth has boarded a new submarine thriller titled Subversion. Hemsworth was last seen in the well received Mad Max universe prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and, of course, headlines Netflix’s blockbuster Extraction action franchise.
Patrick Vollrath is helming the thriller which sees Lorenzo di Bonaventura set to produce per his di Bonaventura Pictures production banner. The fil is hoping to go in front of the cameras this fall in Hemsworth’s native Australia.
Per THR, Subversion is being described as “Die Hard on a submarine” and “centers on a once-promising Naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like operation into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters. Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.”
Hemsworth is definitely ultra-popular and has proven himself in the arena of action cinema so here’s looking that this one hits the target.
