“Are we having fun yet?! One of the premiere action pics of the 90’s which pitted two of action cinema’s gargantuan stars is making its way to 4K limited edition Steelbook courtesy of Best Buy. That’s right! We’re talking about Universal Soldier which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.

From director Roland Emmerich, came a testosterone laced action extravaganza with two action phenoms for the price of one. The movie featured JC and Lundgren as two dead Vietnam soldiers who are reanimated as indestructible killing machines via a top secret government project. Stripped of all memories at first, the project goes severely awry when Van Damme’s Luc Deveraux becomes self aware along with Lundgren’s Andrew Scott. The only problem is that while Luc only wants to make his way home back to his parents, Scott is still all out crazy from what happened in Nam as Luc tried to put a stop to him from killing innocent civilians.

This leads to a chase to end all chases as Luc must do battle with Scott and the other UniSols. We all know that it leads up to the climatic brawl between our two action star heavyweights in one awesome display of fisticuffs. The fight showcases Van Damme’s balletic martial arts mastery pitted against the sheer, brute, savage strength of Lundgren. It is definitely one of the best brawls in cinematic action history. Plus it contains one great villain death with “You’re discharged Sarge!”

I always loved the low key performance of Van Damme as he is essentially a kid discovering new things and his “I just want to eat,” diner fate is a memorable highlight. Lundgren goes all in with his demented portrayal of Scott. He was clearly having fun with the over the top bravado and it radiates in every scene. I always felt that this was one of his best performances.
