I’ll admit that I was on the fence when director Fede Alvarez’s new Alien project was announced. Seeing that James Cameron’s Aliens is one of my all-time favorite pieces of cinema, I’m still sore that we never got a continuation of that entry. After all, Cameron’s film was a perfect blending of sci-fi horror coupled with military style combat action for one of the most bombastic films ever made. Once I saw the initial teaser for Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, I was immediately intrigued and somewhat excited for the film as it is said to harken back to Ridley Scott’s iconic first film.
Entertainment Weekly has supplied fans with all new images as well as more in-depth plot details about the characters and you can see the new pics below including another awesome pic of final girl star Spaeny armed with the newest edition of the classic M-41A Pulse Rifle!

In EW’s article about the summer flick, he outlines more about the characters as they are essential interstellar blue-collar workers like in the first movie, but they are much younger and probably even less equipped to deal with this latest Xenomorph assault.
“I liked this concept of putting people in the front seat of the story who are closer to what the audience is — not that the audience is young, more that the audience is completely virgin to the realities of space. When the characters are professionals, they know more than you do. But when they’re still in their early 20s, they don’t know how to operate the f—ing airlock.”
Alien: Romulus also takes place in the 57-year timespan between Alien and Aliens. This is why the new pulse rifle looks different than the version the Colonial Marines wielded in Cameron’s sci-fi opus as the technology is better than the first film but not as advanced as in the second. Alvarez also made sure that his crew was partially made up of ones who were part of Stan Winston’s unit in Aliens, and they were present on set every step of the way to make sure the latest xenomorph, was closely tailored to H.R. Giger’s original design.
Spaeny stars along with David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Spaeny is most likely the final girl of the film and here’s hoping Ripley’s can-do spirit enters her body so she can do battle with the iconic monster and represent for the human race.
Alien: Romulus looks to pay homage to the original Ridley Scott classic Alien with the look and feel of this being a slasher pic with a Xenomorph as the prime antagonist. We also do know that the timeline for this installment rests between Alien and Aliens but there will be no connection to any other films of the franchise. looks like the ultra-updated looking pulse rifle is the only returning character from previous entries. I still wish we got a full-on sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens with Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn reprising their roles of Ellen Ripley and Dwayne Hicks respectively, but this is looking promising although it’s only a minute, but you know me, I’m a fan of back in the day when there weren’t twenty trailers for one movie that gave everything away before it even opened. I’d be fine if this was the only teaser we got but you know that’s not gonna happen. It definitely looks more fan friendly then Scott’s last two films Promethius and Alien: Covenant. The addition of the bad ass weaponry from Aliens is a nice touch and here’s hoping it gets used a lot like in the second war film of the franchise. After all, Riley didn’t have any automatic firepower in the first one, so things are looking a little better for Spaeny.
Alien: Romulus will hopefully do its job and terrorize moviegoers when it hits theaters this summer on August 16th!
