The time has come and with it we have confirmation that stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are ready to roll and don some serious shades and retro clothes and eradicate crime in Miami as the long talked about Miami Vice reboot is a go. Variety brought news yesterday that Top Gun Maverick and F1 helmer Joseph Kosinski is also set to direct with an official title dropping as well.
Miami Vice ’85 is the new title and Universal has even announced a release date set for next year with production to start very soon. The reboot will also be shot for IMAX and will hit theaters on August 6th, 2027.
According to Variety: “Jordan, the newly minted best actor Oscar winner, will star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, with Oscar nominee Butler playing James “Sonny” Crockett. (Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson first portrayed the suave South Florida detectives in the classic 80s TV series; then Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx starred in the first big-screen adaptation, 2006’s “Miami Vice,” directed by Michael Mann.).”
The official plot for Miami Vice ’85 is currently classified but we do have a little something in regard to what we can expect. Old and new fans alike.
“Kosinski’s “Miami Vice ’85” will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
A good takeaway from the above description and new title is that this Miami Vice reboot is going all out retro with it embracing the fabulous 80’s as well as the first season of the iconic season when it was at its best. Havin an Oscar winner in Jordan and an Oscar nominee in Butler to take over the coveted roles is also another feather in the cap. As a product of the 80’s, I’m expecting all the great songs that flooded the show to show up especially the iconic and atmospheric In the Air Tonight by the great Phil Collins. Cue the expensive cars, delicious fashions and endless amounts of ammo because we are going back in time baby!
Needless to say, I was a huge fan of the original show and that it changed TV forever. The series finale where Crokett and Tubbs take out a crime lord as Honeymoon Suite’s song Bad Attitude blared in the background was an 80’s pulsating chef’s kiss. I listen to that song on repeat on Spotify. By the way, said crime lord was played by a young up and coming Ian McShane from the John Wick franchise so just a little bit of casting trivia for you all.
I also enjoyed the 2006 Miami Vice remake with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx which was directed by creator Michael Mann but always thought that it should have been set in the 80’s as well. Even though it wasn’t as glitzy and glamourous as the show opting for a much darker tone, it still went hard and big with a bullet riddles, satisfying ending.
Lock ‘N Load and stay tuned for more to come. It’s palm trees and sunshine in our future! Bring on the nostalgia!
