Three living legends share the screen for the first time in filmmaker Ryan Watson’s directorial debut. Giving celluloid birth as a short film concept, Watson has succeeded in assembling some of the best martial arts icons in a story of a college student’s search for honor and redemption. The film is called Paper Made and it stars action star Michael Jai White, The Last Dragon’s Taimak, action design maestro Marrese Crump, Walter E. Jones (best known for his stints on the Power Rangers) and new age combatant Myles Truitt.

Directed by Ryan Watson, this martial arts drama follows Tavon Watkins (Myles Truitt), a college student whose academic future is thrown into chaos after a severe hazing incident. Searching for purpose, he’s pulled into a secret fraternity of Black martial artists who challenge him to confront his ego, his legacy, and the true meaning of brotherhood. PAPER MADE marks the first time three pioneering Black action stars, Michael Jai White, Taimak, and Walter E. Jones, have shared the screen together.
Watson helmed the ambitious martial arts film and co-wrote the script along with Jerron Horton (Netflix’s Forever). The stacked cast features Quartay DeNaya, TNA superstars Daria Rae Berenato and Mara Sadè, viral martial arts sensation Jair Muhammad, Sam Lee Herring, Jaden Lucas Miller, Zephaniah Terry, Marrese Crump, Jamara Garrett, Devante Thomas, De’Andre Asbury, and viral martial artists Michael Quick McGee and Cequence Henry, among a roster that features 13 black belt level martial artists. TRAILER TACTICAL REACTION: At first glance, Paper Made looks to combine old and new gen martial arts talent while displaying a timely story infused with some serious and jaw dropping action design. There is no shortage of extreme combat action and while we don’t see any of the icons throw down, I’m hopeful that they will deploy what made them icons in the field. After all, you do not include sick talent like this without serving up some fan service to go along with the dramatic undertones of the story. Paper Made still looks to check the boxes for fans of fight cinema so this one has made it onto my must watch list post haste.
