Aside from the film Warrior, there haven’t really been many MMA based dramas that have hit with blunt force like Rocky has for boxing. Most MMA flicks are relegated to actioners that treat the sport like a 90’s VHS underground fight flick. Halle Berry did take a stab at it last year with the Netflix fight drama Bruised but that movie was forgotten about almost as fast as it had come out.
Well, there is another MMA drama on the horizon and like Berry’s, this one is female centric as well with Chloe Grace Moretz and Lupita Nyong’o readying to center the Octagon for the MMA infused fight film Strawweight which will hail from the producers of Hereditary and will feature the two stars on a collision course with each other for two very different reasons.

The movie is launching sales this week at the EFM courtesy of WME Independent and CAA Media Finance and it “follows the journey of two fighters who find themselves competing against each other in the Octagon. One is a young woman (Moretz) whose life is changed forever when she discovers her passion for the UFC, while the other is a former champion (Nyong’o) who is determined to reclaim her title by reinventing herself. Both want the same thing — respect — but only one can come out on top.”
James M. Johnson, who is best known for producing and directing for the second unit on past movies like The Green Knight, The Old Man and the Gun, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and the yet to be released Mother Mary, will make his helming debut with this one. Paul Harrill penned the screenplay from a story by Johnson as well as himself. Making sure that the MMA aspect of the film is well taken care and will hit hard with realism will be UFC superstar and former Strawweight Division champion Rose Namajunas. She will also act as one of the executive producers on the project.
