With the great news that Jon Bernthal was taking his version of The Punisher to the big screen in this July’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, many hardcore fans were, of course, worried that the gun toting anti-hero would be watered down given the film’s PG-13 rating. After all, the source material, previous films and Bernthal’s own take was R-rated so there is quite the sense of skepticism to be had.
Fear not true believers as Bernthal himself has now gone on record and confirmed that he made sure that his true self would indeed be well represented when he hits the screen this summer to take on everyone’s favorite neighborhood wall-crawler.
Bernthal gave an interview for Screen Rant and had this to say while talking about the upcoming Spidey flick.
“Around that same time, there will also be this Punisher special that’s coming out that I think will be as sort of high-octane kind of Punisher as you’ve ever seen. And I think what was really important to me and to Destin [Daniel Cretton] and to Tom [Holland] is that we believed that the Punisher that could walk off of the Spider-Man set could walk on to the special set. I do believe that we achieved that.”

Now take this with a grain of salt but I do believe that Bernthal wouldn’t steer us wrong when it comes to portraying The Punisher. Sure, there won’t be massive amounts of brutal violence, but I feel that they will respect the character and bring him as close to the edge as possible. I’ll take it as it will be nothing short of awesome to see Bernthal don the skull on the largest screen possible when the film hits this summer. If you feel the need to complain and be ultra-negative, go right ahead but this Punisher fan is excited to the max.
Along with Brand New Day, Bernthal will also be starring in his own one shot special which was announced in February of last year. The, as of now, untitled Punisher special was co-written by Bernthal along with Reinaldo Marcus Green who also is the director. Plot details are still classified, but we can confirm that the events of the special will hit right after the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1.
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Just Mercy, American Born Chinese) is helming Spider-Man: Brand New Day from a screenplay penned by Spider-Man franchise writer Chris McKenna who also did Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland, of course, returns as Peter Parker/Spider-Man with Jon Bernthal playing Frank Castle/The Punisher. Other returning franchise stars include Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned. Newcomers include Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) stars in an undisclosed role, and Liza Colón-Zayas.
