Let me preface by saying that I am a fan of both live action iterations of the video game Tomb Raider AKA Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. First, we had Angeline Jolie’s 2001 emergence as an action heroine in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the subsequent 2003 sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. Then there was a lull until Hollywood gave us the unsuccessful reboot in 2018 starring Alicia Vikander which is criminally underrated and a more stripped down, bare bones version of the video game adventurer but alas Vikander became a one shot as the film underperformed.
Now Prime Video has the cameras rolling for their stab at the IP, simply titled Tomb Raider, and with production underway and star Sophie Turner (Fox’s X-Men films, Game of Thrones) taking the reins, we have our first official look at the actress, and she looks retro perfect as she is in full on character complete with glasses and double pistols. Hopefully the series, which boasts a sensational cast behind Turner, will be as good as this first look image but for now scroll below and introduce yourself to this generation’s newest Lara Croft!

Turner also shared the pic on social media and as you can see from the above gallery, she looks pitch perfect next to her video game counterpart to the right. The cast starring alongside Turner is a veritable who’s who of Hollywood with Martin Bobb-Semple, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein also starring.

Those responsible for the upcoming Prime Video series includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge who is doing the hat trick as creator, writer, and executive producer of Tomb Raider. Amazon MGM has partnered with Story Kitchen and Crystal Dynamics with Chad Hodge (Single All the Way, The Playboy Club, Wayward Pines) and Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief) also serving as executive producers. Tulleken is also directing the production which just got started this week.
Only time will tell if audiences as well as die hard fans of the game welcome Turner with open arms into the Tomb Raider world but for now, it certainly looks like those involved have understood the assignment. Turner looks stellar and clearly has put the work in when it comes to the physical traits of the iconic adventurer.
