Filmmaker Alex Garland (Civil War) is reaping the success of his critically acclaimed war movie Warfare right now, but he is set to revisit an old friend as he has reunited with director Danny Boyle for the next thrilling chapter of the 28 Days Later franchise with the third entry 28 Years Later. This new and frightening new vision is also supposed to launch a brand-new trilogy, and the latest trailer has roared online with all the jump scares you can handle. Scroll below for more!
28 Years Later features a cast that includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Alfie Williams (His Dark Materials), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). It’s also been reported that Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) is also set to reprise his role of Jim who was essentially the main character of the first movie who survived the events of the original. Garland, who wrote the first film, returns to pen this newest installment. Boyle and Garland were involved with 28 Weeks Later in only an executive producing capacity.
Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

It’s been a minute since I’ve seen the other movies so I will definitely be revisiting them to reeducate myself on all things infected humans. These films and Boyle’s tireless direction have reinvented the so-called zombie genre and are certainly at the top of the heap with fans everywhere.
Garland has written the next chapters as well with Boyle directing this one, but he will not be directing the second flick as he has passed the mantle to Nia DaCosta (Candyman and The Marvels) to direct 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple. Boyle might still direct the third offering but that hasn’t been decided as of yet.
Fiennes, who stars in the new one, spoke with IndieWire back in October of last year and offered his take on the plot for 28 Years Later. “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd but actually is a force for good. “
