Here’s another movie that I had forgotten about and it’s one that would probably be met with more scrutiny if the man who directed the initial version wasn’t directing the new one. John Woo’s The Killer is considered by many to be a classic in the genre and possibly one of the best Hong Kong action films ever made. The movie signaled Woo’s triumphant foray into his iconic bullet ballet series of films and one of many that would star action icon Chow Yun Fat. So, when it was announced that Woo would indeed be remaking his own movie, fans were left scratching their heads as to why Woo would bother. The remake has been done for a while now and it will finally see the light of day when it premieres on the Peacock streaming service so unfortunately it won’t showcase Woo’s signature action on the big screen.
The film stars Nathalie Emmanuel of The Fast & Furious franchise as assassin Zee who draws the ire of her handler Finn (Sam Worthington), when she refuses to execute a mark which happens to be a young blind woman played by Diana Silvers. Now on the run, things get worse when a seasoned police investigator named Sy (Omar Sy) makes it his mission to track her down. What culminates I’m sure will be a lot of double fisted gun action set to insane action design and white doves flying through the air.

The IGN article also included some quotes from the leading lady where she talked about her character.
“[Zee] has a very specific code in how she likes to do things,” Emmanuel told IGN. “And when she’s told who and when to kill somebody, she does it in her own specific way. And her dilemma in this movie is that she’s being asked to kill somebody who she doesn’t believe deserves it. And for some reason she can’t believe that they deserve to be killed …“
Sy also spoke of his character by adding, “I like Sy because he’s a loyal cop playing by his own rules to make real justice and really do it with all his heart,” Sy said. “It’s more about instinct and feelings, you know? He’s the good guy, but sometimes he can cross the line to do what is best. That was very interesting for me.“
Emmanuel also spoke of how much she loved Woo’ s original film and stated, “I’ve seen it more than a couple of times. (John Woo) was an innovator of action, in my opinion. And just really cared about not just the action, and the sort of excitement and the spectacle of the action, but really cares about the characters and their emotional dilemma as you put it. And so it’s an excellent movie. I’ve seen a lot of John’s movies. I’m a massive fan of Face/Off. I think it’s one of my favorites of his, and Mission: Impossible 2 is obviously fantastic.”
There’s no denying that the new version of The Killer will be compared with the original, but we should probably have some faith in Woo as he saw something in redoing such a classic and iconic actioner. If someone doesn’t slide down a banister while capping off with two guns, I’m definitely going to be disappointed. Plus, the bad guys better wear white so we can gloriously see the blood squibs in full effect. We shall see when The Killer debuts on Peacock on August 23rd.
