It’s easy to forget that with the success of Warner Bros. Monsterverse that Godzilla was created by the Japanese and iconic Toho Studios. After all, it’s been a long while since Toho released a Godzilla flick which was 2016’s Shin Godzilla. That was over seven years ago and from then on it’s been the American version which has also dominated western audiences.
2024 is the 70th anniversary of the iconic monster and with it, Toho is finally releasing a new film which will actually serve as a prequel. Titled Godzilla: Minus One, this one actually takes place in post-WW2 Japan and was helmed by Takashi Yamazaki, who is best known for Space Battleship Yamato. Check out the newest, full length trailer that dropped over the Labor Day weekend.
For the fair weather Godzilla fan, there has been four eras of the iconic lizard over the past 70 years which include the Shōwa era, the Heisei era, the Millennium era, and the Reiwa era. All together, there have been 37 movies that dropped during theses different eras and now it’s gearing up for a brand new one. This doesn’t include Warner Bros. epic dive into the mythology with the films Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the best of them all Godzilla Vs Kong which teamed up the two iconic monsters for one epic brawl. The Monsterverse continues next year with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and the highly anticipated Apple TV Plus series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Toho is back in the game and it looks like Godzilla is back to being the bad guy once again. We all know that he started as a warning for nuclear devastation but he’s also been a defender of Earth as well on many occasions.

It’s good to be a Godzilla fan once again and Godzilla: Minus One is set to stomp theaters on its native Japan on November 1st with a western release courtesy of Toho International a month later on December 1st. Hail to the king baby!
