One of my favorite films of 2022 was without a doubt David Harbour as bad ass Santa in the brutal and violent action flick Violent Night. Filled with family dysfunction, holiday cheer and one ass whipping after another, this film has officially become my go to holiday action movie for future Christmas vacations and it certainly delivered some bad ass holiday cheer.

I was more than pleased to discover that a sequel is now in the works and even though it’ll take some time to hit screens, Harbour will definitely return as the Norse warrior turned St. Nick. The film was a sleeper hit taking in over $75 million worldwide along with VOD sales when the movie hit Digital a few weeks later.
On speaking with The Wrap, director Tommy Wirkola spilled the beans about the sequel and that deals are being made to make it happen.
“Yes,” Wirkola said when we asked if the sequel was happening. “We’re talking about it and we’re just making deals and getting everything in order.”
Wirkola did mention that it would take some time as the script would have to be right and the writing duo of the first one, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, are back deliver more holiday firepower and fisticuffs to make your holiday season even more cheerful.
“We have time to really crack the script and figure out the story,” Wirkola said. “And we have some ideas, me and Pat and Josh and the producers, we’ve been talking about where we want to take it and what we want to see.”

Wirkola also took the time to mention that the follow up will crack on some of the mysteries of the first film and delve deeper into the Santa Claus mythology that was only hinted at in the first film.
“There’s stuff we left on the floor like the North Pole, Mrs. Claus, the elves,” Wirkola said. (The original film was set largely at a Connecticut mansion under siege from the villains.) “But story-wise I think we have a really, really cool idea that expands on the world and scope, but still keeping that tone that we love from the first one.”
I am currently polishing up my 10 best of 2022 article which is a tad late after my two month hiatus but I will say that Violent Night is one of them. The film was a perfect blend of batshit crazy, violent hard R action and even some holiday sentiment. Having Harbour actually be the real dead Santa was icing on the cake as I thought he would just be a guy dressed up as Kris Kringle when this was first announced. The movie is first rate, in your face holiday chaos and clearly Harbour’s best time to date.
While we wait for more details, check out Harbour in action as the man with the bag in my favorite scene from the Action-Flix Approved first installment!
