This is one that’s definitely on my must watch list and from the sounds of it, the movie might just be the wackiest film that Nicolas Cage has been in yet. It’s called Prisoners of the Ghostland and it’s got everything genre fans could possibly hope for in ghosts, samurai and ninjas! Of course Cage is a definite draw as well and with a solid review from our own Anthony Francis back when the film hit the festival circuit, sign me up!
We now have official confirmation that the mass audience will finally be able to view Prisoners of the Ghostland this month when it hits select theaters and VOD. The launch date is September 17th so the wait is almost over.

Prisoners of the Ghostland is set in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town where a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (The Mummy’s Sofia Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within three days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman—and his own path to redemption.
This movie marks the English language debut of Sion Sono‘s (Why Don’t You Play in Hell) and it’s been hailed as Cage’s wildest ride yet. The prolific actor made a statement to the fact in a past interview:
It’s out there. I wear a skintight black leather jumpsuit with grenades attached to different body parts, and if I don’t rescue the governor’s daughter from this state line where they’re all ghosts and bring her back they’re gonna blow me up.
To satisfy you until the film’s release, check out our man Anthony Francis’ take on the film where he called it “an explosion of genres and styles that is entertaining and invent.” Read his full review here!
Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Nick Cassavetes (Face/Off), Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Franchise), and Yuzuka Nakaya (The Forest of Love). The biggest thrill for me in this one is that Japanese bad ass Tak Sakaguchi also has a part in it and here’s hoping that he is utelized to his fullest. Tak is best known for the cult classic Versus as well as Re:Born and the awesome looking Crazy Samurai: 400 VS 1.
I’ll have to post my thoughts on it as well when it hits snd expect a genre bending trailer to hit soon courtesy of RLJE Films that is releasing it!
