Whoever said that Asian action cinema’s best days were well behind them were sorely misinformed as China has been supplying a healthy dose of action, mythology, drama and pulsating action design for decades now and there are no signs of them slowing or stopping by any stretch of the imagination. Back in the day, the period action films and Wuxia film were the staple of the country and today sees a resurgence of that subgenre as one of the most prolific action directors of our time has returned along with an iconic action star who has remained dormant for years.
Prolific martial arts action director Yuen Woo-Ping is back with a vengeance and he’s bringing the one and only Jet Li out of pseudo-retirement with the former’s latest venture into gravity defying, jaw dropping spectacle like no other. The film is called Blades of the Guardians and besides Li’s return, the film boasts a sensational cast including action star Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior), Nicholas Tse (Raging Fire), Max Zhang (Ip Man 3, Wolf Pack) and Tony Leung Ka Fai (The Shadow’s Edge).
A new trailer has been unveiled collecting the insane action set pieces the movie contains and this is full-on, full blown, Hong Kong martial arts movie making at its finest so scroll below for the intense and immersive footage!
Synopsis:
Set on a lawless desert frontier, the film follows Dao Ma, the second most wanted fugitive, tasked with escorting a mysterious prisoner—only to discover that his charge is the empire’s most wanted man. What begins as a routine mission escalates into a relentless pursuit, unfolding as a large-scale road movie shaped by grounded, physical combat and classical martial arts storytelling.

Additional cast includes Yosh Yu, Chen Lijun, Sun Yizhou, Cisha, Li Yunxiao, Kara Wai and Zhang Yi. Mandarin Motion Pictures and Well Go USA are bringing Blades of the Guardians to U.S. theaters starting on February 17. Jet Li has returned and even though he isn’t balletically ballistic like he was back in his heyday, it’s still nothing short of spectacular to see him featured in a period WUXIA film and one directed by another martial arts action icon in filmmaker Yuen Woo-ping. The film is called Blades of Guardians and Li is mixing it up with the likes of Wu Jing (the Wolf Warrior films) and Nicholas Tse of Raging Fire and Customs Frontline. At this point, I miss Jet Li so much that I would take him simply standing there for ninety minutes as he simply elevates any film he is in whether he’s kicking ass and taking names are delivering a monologue.
Well Go USA’s newest trailer is loaded with enough blistering, pulverizing Wire Fu and expertly choreographed empty handed and bladed weaponry combat to fill two films. Wu Jing is certainly an underrated international action star and to see him kick it here is fantastic. The battles scenes look epic and grand in their scale, and the action design looks brutal, bloody and beautiful all at the same time.
Key Highlights:
- A Defining Figure in Action Cinema: From Yuen Woo-ping, whose work as both filmmaker and action choreographer has shaped modern screen combat—from DRUNKEN MASTER and FIST OF LEGEND to THE MATRIX, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, KILL BILL, and THE GRANDMASTER.
- Action Stars Across Generations: Featuring Jet Li (HERO) in one of his first full-scale martial arts performances in years, alongside contemporary action figures Wu Jing (THE WANDERING EARTH), Nicholas Tse (RAGING FIRE), and Max Zhang (THE GRANDMASTER), with veteran dramatic presence from Tony Leung Ka-fai (ELECTION) and Kara Wai (MY YOUNG AUNTIE).
- Physical Action Over Spectacle: Emphasizing close-quarters choreography, weight, and consequence over digital excess, the film foregrounds physical strain and impact—where violence leaves marks rather than spectacle.
