If this casting actually comes to pass, then I feel the sequel for Amazon MGM’s Road House franchise will garner some legit fighting cred. Guy Ritchie is set to helm the follow up which would see star Jake Gyllenhaal returning to the role of Elwood Dalton and now we are getting word that Guardians of the Galaxy alum Dave Bautista is being eyed for a role. For now, nothing is confirmed and neither Bautista nor his reps have commented so take it with a grain of salt thus far.
For those of you living under a rock, Road House is a reboot or reimagining of the 1989 fisticuffs classic which starred the late, great Patrick Swayze and had Gyllenhaal taking over as the iconic character who infamously becomes the cooler of a Florida Keys roadhouse where he quickly finds himself battling bikers, criminals and a narcissistic land grabber who hires a very unhinged henchman in UFC bad boy Conor McGregor. What follows is beatdowns and bravado to the max that did fall short of what the film was supposed to do in my eyes. The reimagining failed to capture what was so special about Swayze’s version so here’s hoping they are able to do something more with the sequel as Swayze never got a chance to do another one.
If Bautista does enter the Octagon for the sequel, there is no word of who he will be playing but with McGregor teased at coming back at the end of the original, I feel that Bautista’s role would be one of a mentor to Dalton similar to how Sam Elliot’s Wade Garrett was to Swayze’s Dalton in the classic.
Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F) is penning the script for the follow up. Producers on board the project include Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, along with Gyllenhaal for his Nine Stories Productions with Josh McLaughlin. Ivan Atkinson is serving as an executive produce.
That’s all there really is to say on the matter right now so lock n load and check back here in the future for more follow ups!
