The movie was pulled from the release schedule but that hasn’t stopped Sony and Capcom from filling roles for their long delayed new Street Fighter flick. From Andrew Koji to Jason Momoa, there has been several key announcements made and the movie isn’t even anywhere near ready to film but let’s talk more casting news while we wait to hate this newest version.
According to several big-name trades, actress Callina Liang has been hired to play Chun-Li in the future release (when we don’t know) and we all know that in the game lore, Chun-Li is the iconic Chinese martial arts whirlwind warrior who is also an intrepid Interpol officer who is out for vengeance when her father is killed. Aside from Ken and Ryu, Chun-Li is the most recognizable character from the long line of video games.
Liang joins an already announced stacked cast that includes Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, and Orville Peck and she will be a major player in the storyline. Bad Trip’s Kitao Sakurai is helming the pic from a script penned by Captain America: Brave New World, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Dalan Musson.
The film had secured a March 20, 2026 launch date, before it was pulled from the schedule, and I did say in my previous article that it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it didn’t speak well for the project at the time. What was clear was that Sony and Capcom wanted to go back to the drawing board after a few failed attempts at the property which included the tongue in cheek 1994 version with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late, great Raul Julia in his final role. The film does hold a special place in the hearts of fans everywhere, but it isn’t a true adaptation of the game source material. We won’t even speak of 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which was a grittier turn for the I.P.
I do believe that we will see Street Fighter energize cinema screens again, or maybe smaller screens via streaming and this latest bit of news is giving fans hope that a good adaptation is out there waiting to be seen. The video game remains one of the hottest ones around with a loyal fan base, so I feel we have to be extra patient to get what we finally want in the end. These actors are certainly a step in the right direction, and it bodes well for how serious they are taking it this time.
We shall see how all this unfolds in the near future. Lock n Load and get ready to rumble for more intel to come!
